Blast from the past: Beach volleyball, a [Not so] secret platonic relationship and more

Author’s note: Decided to pull up this very old writing from December 2019, this is the time when Austin is a different guy; he used to have a very long yet really curly hair while his body is very different to today.

And oh, did I mention Tumblr is now starting to drain me and my creative purpose? It is just I am starting to feel Tumblr isn’t for me unless when there is a link to any of the posts on my Blogspot here.

Oh plus this takes place in Honolulu, Oahu; Hawaii and the school I’ve been in this story is Punahou while Austin is a just a young innocent pup with his long curly hair in Moanalua.

Anyway, enjoy this post I am attempting to finish it back in December 2019 however I am unable to due to creative block then now I am able to pull this ‘Blast from the past’ writing.

During March, every year in Waikiki; they normally hold a beach volleyball event and today is the Duke Kahanamoku’s Beach Volleyball game event for under sixteen boys and girls event.

Every year; many young people especially the teens who are just around from the age of thirteen to the age of sixteen from different types of schools in all of the Hawaii islands (We are talking here about Kauai, Oahu: Maui and the big island of Hawaii additionally Molokai and very seldom few from Lanai) are signing up for the event with the coaches from their school.

Austin is one of them alongside his teammate who did play beach volleyball with him are from a public school called Moanalua.

While the coach sign both of them up for the competition, I remember how I missed out the first couple of days due to school; classes: homework from school and also on a Saturday which they are running the girls Under 13 Beach volleyball category in the morning then in the afternoon—it is the boys turn to play for half of the afternoon then Sunday is an off day.

Monday is when they are supposed to run the competition on the qualifying round then they can move on to the quarterfinals round however it is cancelled due to very strong winds and even I didn’t go surfing that day since the wave conditions are looking rough and difficult for me to surf—even Ava told me she couldn’t even think about going surfing on that day due to a lot of strong winds.

Tuesday is the day when they can only halfway run the qualifying round however it was cut short due to weather conditions on a thunderstorm in the afternoon.

The rain does arrive again on Wednesday which makes it difficult for them to run the competition and I have to wait until either Thursday or Friday to meet up with Austin and support him.

Thursday; they can run the competition however I miss it out due to school however he told me I needed to see him by Friday afternoon ever since the competition for the boys qualifying round for the event only starts in the afternoon.

Thankfully on Friday, it is only a half day of school thus I can get to see Austin at the beach volleyball competition.

“Hey!!!” I called out Austin playfully.

“Hey, hello.” Replied Austin shyly with a shy smile on his face.

We give each other a hug and I give him a kiss on both cheeks as a greeting.

“Hi, how are you?” Ask Austin; feeling shy.

“Good, how are you?”

“Good; thank you.”

The event is noisy yet crowded with people on coaches, participating players from different schools all over Hawaii, not just from Oahu but Maui; the big island of Hawaii and even Kauai alongside Lanai and Molokai.

“So . . .”

“What?”

I tried to come up with a proper question about the game and when it is his turn to play against which team.

“How is the game?”

“It is great, how are your classes?”

“Good and when you are playing with your partner?”

“Well we are supposed to play on Kamehameha High school and it won’t be up until later, so I’ll see you then?”

“Yeah, see you then.”

“See you,” I replied; trying to sound optimistic and light however it sounds more blunt and my voice sounds monotonous.

As I tried to look for a place to sit down and support Austin from the sidelines; thankfully I remember there are two girls who may not be from Hawaii but they are from the mainland for a girls holiday then when they told one of their friends only couldn’t make it all thanks to a cute yet hot looking guy which one of her friends considered to be her official boyfriend yet however they think her ‘Rain check’ excuse is all because of a guy.

Now, they decided not to waste their energy and lend me their friends’ seat to me while they are enjoying their time in Hawaii.

Maybe they are right; just when one of your friends decided to rather take a ‘rain check’ excuse then it is another reason only to see a guy or a girl behind your back and your friends back.

At first I worry they might be high school students who rather drop out of school however thankfully *Amy who is the taller and leaner girl has told me they both are graduated from high school and gone to different colleges however they still get to see each other during the seasonal break.

*Jaime who is the plus sized friend has told me they actually plan their trip to Hawaii for the spring break and when they are planning it for spring break (*The time when they are seniors in high school); they decided to go to Hawaii as a girls trip but turns out one of their friend *Jen is too busy trying to get in touch with a guy who may be cute yet good looking as well.

As I sit down in between the girls while we exchanged ‘hello’ greetings; they offered me a true sets of genuine smiles on when they sense my arrival and my presence as well while Amy offers me plain popcorn from a paper bag which I heard many locals had used it as it is made of recyclable items to turn into something useful.

I decided to accept the offer ever since I non-stop declining the offer but I decided to take up the offer for once instead of continuously declining the offer just as when someone offers you a food or a drink.

As I listened to Amy speaking about how they always planned to watch the high school beach volleyball in person and now this is their chance.

I too wanted to watch how he plays beach volleyball with his partner from the same team on a team called Ka Ulukoa.

They also talk to me about beauty tips and advices which reminds me of how they did remind me of Michelle and Promise very much as they both are make-up artist and beauty experts.

As they announced Kamehameha duo players are up against Austin’s duo from Moanalua—this is when I got very excited.

“Wow, is that your boyfriend?” Ask Jaime; sounding confused while pointing out at Austin.

“More like ‘so-called’ boyfriend.” I replied; sounding sheepish when anyone asked me is Austin is my boyfriend?

The answer is no, he is only a friend or rather a best friend.

I may think Austin is only my best friend except people start thinking we might have a platonic relationship between us. (*Plays cheesy romantic music in the background while imagining Austin and I—we have a serious actual relationship between each other as a platonic relationship.*)

“Oh, but you two look so deep in a relationship between each other.” Adds Amy ever the hopeless romantic one.

“What? No! We are just friends as what I mentioned earlier!” I protested so loudly which makes me felt cautious about how I attract the unnecessary attention from others and even Austin looks at me like I am letting out a secret or something like that.

“Oh . . . I’m sorry, everybody for getting loud at this point. I didn’t meant to make waves at here in Waikiki Beach, so sorry; my bad.” I announce the apology to everybody including the two girls as I am feeling truly yet deeply sheepish for going too loud on the volume of my voice.

“Ah it’s okay—we all know we tried not to let the cat out of the bag but sometimes it happens out of nowhere.” Calls a guy who understands why I am trying to keep the platonic relationship between me and Austin as a secret.

“Same here; I tried doing the same but I guess not—the plan backfired on me.” Adds another guy who did have a ‘so-called’ secret relationship with his best friend then later they promised no more secrets or games between the guy and his girlfriend who is once used to be his best friend.

Some of the people thankfully understand why I prefer keeping my relationship with Austin as a secret.

'Oh it’s okay we all similar secrets at times like that.” Replied Jaime thoughtfully.

“Same here and maybe we can change the subject; shall we?” Adds Amy.

“Sounds like a good idea to me.” I replied while sitting back down on the soft beige sand.

Plus thankfully while we watch the rest of the game—we managed to steer clear of any talks on a relationship.

“Did you won?” I ask Austin just when the event is over in the evening.

“We did however we did made mistakes though however we managed to go through the matches at this point.”

I give a huge sigh of relief, thank goodness they did it! If only Austin’s family is down here at the Waikiki Beach then they would have been proud of their son.

However even after apologising to Jaime and Amy earlier which they accepted my apology plus asking me to stop apologising too much—I still feel embarrassed about what has happened earlier on how when I told them we are only friends as we have a secret platonic relationship between each other; they couldn’t help but gushing some more about our relationship then I instantly snapped out of nowhere which makes me really embarrassed about our relationship.

“Hey, you okay?” Ask Austin softly just when he found out I am rather staring down at the sandy ground instead of making proper eye contact with him.

“Oh, I’m okay—it is just I am feeling embarrassed about the comment I made earlier and when I made the comment earlier; I didn’t mean to raise my voice yet to let everybody know our relationship between us.” I replied, sounding embarrassed and upset.

“Oh okay, I’m sorry to hear this from you but it’s okay: sometimes people would think we had a relationship however we want to keep it private however it turns out it backfires on us and we either can continue on with our relationship happily however we have to keep it private or sadly we have to break up and move onto someone else.”

“Yeah, I know—Austin.”

“I’m sorry to hear this though; do you still want to go to my house?” He ask, sounding optimistic just to offer a true sense of comfort to me.

“No, I’d rather go back; sorry.” I replied; sounding glumly ever since I am afraid of causing more problems between us and his family wouldn’t be too happy to hear it from me.

“Oh,” Now he sounds truly disappointed just when I turn down the invitation to his house.

“I’m sorry, Austin.”

That night when I am studying; my dad offers me to go out together to have a father and daughter time—I declined thus I am feeling too embarrassed about how I didn’t mean to ‘make waves’ at the beach volleyball game event to cause an embarrassment.

As he is working away in his office, I decided to continue study additionally planning on which university or college I am going.

When the doorbell rings, my dad decided to get it for me. It is Austin who did arrived in a short sleeve shirt and a pair of board shorts plus a pair of flip flops (Or slippers) on his feet while he did take away two containers which it has *Chicken Pho inside. (*I am craving for it for your information.)

“Hey is she in? Your daughter?” Ask Austin; sounding nervous.

“Ah, she is in but she isn’t going out of her room right now but do you want me to set this dinner up?” He replied, sounding exhausted yet he has a concerning voice.

“Yes please; sir and thank you.”

“Go see her, she needs you.”

“I don’t know; sir . . .”

“Trust me; you may never know she needs you.” He replied with a gentle smile on his face.

“Oh okay.”

As he got up to see me, he knocks on my door softly and he asked “Can I come in?”

I turned around and all I can do is nod quietly.

“Hey, I brought you dinner; your favourite: chicken pho.”

“I don’t know; Austin . . . thanks for the dinner though but I don’t we are meant for each other though . . .”

He shushes me while placing his index finger to the lips.

I look at his beautiful colour changing eyes; his eyes are now a romantic green.

“I like you . . . no wait, scratch that: I love you. For real.” He pipes up with a genuine smile on his face.

I look at him with confusion; what is he thinking?!

“I mean it, I mean when you earlier wishing me luck—I remember I ask you for a hug then we couldn’t let go of each other just as if there is an invisible elephant glue on us, making it hard for us to let go of each other.”

“Oh,” I said just as when I finally found my voice again.

“Believe me, this hug earlier is worth the luck.” He continued talking with a genuine smile at the end of the sentence.

“Oh Austin, I. . . I love you; sweetie.” I replied while placing his hand aside and start hugging him by wrapping him around in my arm.

“I love you too . . . sweetie pie.” He adds while blushing—feeling just as when the invisible weight on your shoulders are lifted off.

For the rest of the night, we did enjoyed our dinner of warm bowl of chicken pho and a cold glass of ice lemon tea.
